Energy

The student will investigate and understand basic sources of energy, their origins, transformations, and uses. Key concepts include
a) potential and kinetic energy;
b) the role of the sun in the formation of most energy sources on Earth;
c) nonrenewable energy sources (fossil fuels, including petroleum, natural gas, and coal);
d) renewable energy sources (wood, wind, hydro, geothermal, tidal, and solar); and
e) energy transformations (heat/light to mechanical, chemical, and electrical energy).

Construction

Craft Training & Apprenticeship
  • Painting
  • Painting is the application of paint, varnishes, lacquers, sealers, stains, etc. Painters also apply all types of wallpaper, vinyl wall fabrics and all types of coverings or coatings. Painters make all of the necessary preparations prior to application. Work will be performed on all types of buildings, both interior and exterior.

  • Carpentry
  • Carpenters measure, saw, level and nail woods and other building materials. They install tile and insulation, acoustical ceilings, cabinets, siding, and much more. They work with many tools and materials to build houses, schools, churches and hotels. They erect skyscrapers, hospitals, office buildings, and prisons, and construct bridges, tunnels and highways. Carpenters make up the largest single group of skilled workers in the country.

  • Tile Work
  • Tile Layers install ceramic or stone tile on floors, walls, ceilings, countertops, building exteriors according to blueprints or other instructions. They are responsible for layout, mortar bed installation, cutting tiles, and bonding the tile with cement or epoxy mortars or mastic. Work may involve scaffolding and working at heights. Tile Layers are also expected to have experience as Tile Finishers.

    Tile Finishers work together with Tile Layers to create installations of ceramic or stone tile. The Finisher fills joints and cleans and polishes finished surfaces, which may include showers, tubs, countertops, floors, stairs, building exteriors, ceilings and others. They may also perform finish caulking. The Finisher does most of the setting up of materials at the job and cleans up afterwards. They mix all mortars, by machine or by hand using a mixing hoe. Tile Finishing is very active work, and is often strenuous. It may involve scaffolding.

  • Skilled Labor
  • As construction work becomes more dependent on the use of complex equipment and machinery and a broader selection of materials and techniques the construction craft laborer is increasingly expected to have enhanced competencies in using, managing, and understanding resources, information, and technology. They also need to have basic communication, comprehension, and interpersonal skills.

Construction laborers perform a wide range of physically demanding tasks involving building and highway construction, tunnel and shaft excavation, hazardous waste removal, environmental remediation, and demolition.
